綆汲（上耕杏反杜注左傳云綆汲水繩也方言自關而東周洛韓魏之間謂索為綆說文從系更聲下金岌反文字典說汲引水也從水及聲集從糸作級是階級首級也非汲水義）。

Gengji 綆汲 (the first character is fanqie: 耕 + 杏; Du's commentary on the Zuozhuan states: "Geng 綆 is a rope for drawing water." The Fangyan states: "East of the Pass, between Zhou, Luo, Han, and Wei, a cord is called a geng 綆." The Shuowen states it has the silk radical and the phonetic component geng 更. The second character is fanqie: 金 + 岌; the Wenzidian shuo states: "Ji 汲 means to draw water. It has the water radical and the phonetic component ji 及." In the Anthology it is written with the silk radical as ji 級, which means steps or decapitated heads, and not the drawing of water).
