Examining the earth (鑑地: [鑑 has] the fanqie sound jia-xian [jiàn]. The Guangya states: 'Jian means to illuminate; bright.' The Yupian states: 'A mirror.' The Shuowen states: 'A large basin; collecting clear water to reflect the moon; it derives from metal (金) with the sound jian (監).' It is also written as 鑒).
