Perilous wasteland: [the upper character] has the fanqie *xu* + *yan*. The *Guangya* states: '險 (*xian*) means obstructed.' The *Fangyan* states: '險 means high.' Jia Kui's commentary on the *Guoyu* states: '險 means dangerous.' Wang Bi's commentary on the *Zhouyi* states: '險 means difficult.' The *Shuowen* states: '險 means obstructed and difficult.' It has the mound radical (阝, pronounced *fu*) and 僉 (pronounced *qi* + *jian*) as phonetic. Sūtra texts written with the mountain radical as 嶮, pronounced *yan*, are incorrect. 嶮 means a slight unevenness, a pit; both its meaning and pronunciation diverge. In accord with the sūtra’s meaning, it should be changed to the mound radical as 險. The lower character has the fanqie *ku* + *bang*. The *Kaosheng* states: '壙埌 (*kuanglang*) [pronounced *lang*] describes the appearance of distant wild plains.' The *Cang Jie pian* states: '壙 means expansive and empty.' The *Guangya* states: '壙 means vast.' The *Shuowen* states: 'A trench,' pronounced *qi* + *yan*; 'a pit.' It has the earth radical (土) and 廣 as phonetic. Sūtra texts written with the sun radical as 曠 are mistaken; 曠 means bright and clear, which diverges completely from the sūtra's meaning. Writing it with the earth radical is standard.
