Looks back and turns toward all sentient beings (顧復一切眾生: *復* is pronounced *fù* [扶福反]. The *Classic of Poetry* says: "Father begot me, mother bore me, caressed me, fed me, raised me, nurtured me, looked back to me, turned toward me, went in and out carrying me in their arms." Zheng Xuan's gloss says: "*Gu* [顧] means looking back. *Fu* [復] means turning around. It means that though [the parent] has gone only a short distance from the child, with every step they still turn to look back." Also, his gloss on the *Classic of Poetry* says: "'Looking back and turning toward' means caring for and repeatedly [watching] them." The intention of the present sūtra is that the bodhisattva does likewise toward sentient beings).
