Śāriputra (舍利弗: Fully termed Śāriputra (奢唎補怛羅). 'Śāri' translates here as heron; 'putra' translates here as son. The mother of this venerable one had eyes with sharply distinct black and white, darting and moving like the eyes of a heron; therefore everyone of the time called her Śāri. The venerable one was named after his mother, hence 'Son of the Heron'. The old translation as 'Shenzi' (Son of the Body) is erroneous. In Sanskrit texts, the physical body is called śarīra (設利羅); hence we know they are completely distinct).
