Balustrade (鈎闌): the first character has the fanqie 苟侯 [gǒu]. Liu Huan's commentary on the Zhouyi states: '鈎 means to hook and draw forward.' The Shuowen jiezi states: 'Curved.' Composed of 金 ('metal') with 勾 phonophore. The second character has the fanqie 嬾單 [lán]. The Kaosheng states: 'A 闌 is a wooden screen at a door.' In transmission, written with the 木 ('wood') radical as 欄, which is the name of a tree and not the primary meaning.
