Fenghuang (鳳凰: the upper character has the fanqie 馮貢; the lower character is pronounced huáng. The Erya says: "The male is the fèng, its female the huáng." Guo Pu's commentary says: "An auspicious bird." Xu Shen's Shuowen says: "A divine bird, emerging from the Country of Gentlemen in the east, soaring beyond the four seas. It has dragon markings, a tortoise back, a swallow's throat, a cock's beak, and is complete in all five colours. Without a wutong tree it does not perch; without bamboo seeds it does not eat. Singing at dawn is called 'Manifesting Brightness' (發明); singing at noon is called 'Surpassing the New Moon' (上朔); singing at dusk is called 'Full Prosperity' (滿昌); singing at twilight is called 'Solid Constancy' (固常); singing at night is called 'Preserving Long Duration' (保長). When seen, the realm is at great peace").
