Liver and gallbladder (肝膽: the upper character is pronounced gān. The Baihu tong says: "The liver corresponds to benevolence (rén); it is the essence of eastern wood." Master Wang's Maijing says: "The liver pairs with the gallbladder as its receptacle; its stored spirit is the hún; its outward manifestation is the eyes. Hence, when the liver has heat, the eyes become red." The Shuowen says: "Formed with [the semantic element] yuè (月/肉) and [the phonetic element] gān (干)." The lower character has the fanqie 荅敢. The Baihu tong says: "The gallbladder is the receptacle of the liver and governs benevolence; therefore, the benevolent person has courage." Master Wang's Maijing says: "When the gallbladder is diseased, the spirit is not maintained." The Shuowen says: "Formed with [the semantic element] ròu (肉) and [the phonetic element] zhān (詹); zhān is pronounced zhān").
