弱齡(上而斫反字書云弱劣也玉篇云不強下郎丁反顧野王云古謂年為齡說文云從齒令聲案弱齡即未冠之前也故禮記云男子二十冠而字鄭云成人矣也)。

Tender age (弱齡: the first character is pronounced with the fanqie 而斫 [ny- + -ɨak = ruò]. A dictionary says: 'Ruo (弱) means inferior.' The Yupian says: 'Not strong.' The second character is pronounced with the fanqie 郎丁 [l- + -eŋ = líng]. Gu Yewang says: 'In antiquity, years of age were called ling (齡).' The Shuowen jiezi says: 'Composed of the tooth radical [齒] with 令 as phonetic.' Examining the phrase, "weak age" refers to the period before the capping ceremony. Thus the Liji says: 'When a man is twenty, he is capped and receives a style name.' Zheng says: 'He has become an adult').
