芟夷（上所銜反字書云伐草也考聲云剪也說文云從草殳會意字殳音殊下以脂反切韻云等也考聲云滅也爾雅云易也說文云從大弓作夷有從戈作夷非也）。

Cut down and wipe out (芟夷: the first character is pronounced with the fanqie 所銜 [ṣ- + -am = shān]. A dictionary says: 'To cut grass.' The Kaosheng says: 'To trim.' The Shuowen jiezi says: 'Composed of grass [艸] and 殳; it is an associative compound character.' 殳 is pronounced 殊 [shū]. The second character is pronounced with the fanqie 以脂 [y- + -i = yí]. The Qieyun says: 'Level.' The Kaosheng says: 'To extinguish.' The Erya says: 'Easy.' The Shuowen jiezi says: 'Composed of 大 and 弓, forming 夷.' Writing 夷 with 戈 is incorrect).
