雉堞 (parapets and battlements: the first character is *ch[í]-l[ǚ]* fan; character dictionaries state: “A 雉 is an [earthen] wall.” The Gongyang zhuan states: “Five planks make a 堵 [*dǔ*]; five 堵 [*dǔ*] make a 雉 [*zhì*]; one hundred 雉 [*zhì*] make a city wall.” He Xiu's commentary says: “It is twenty thousand feet.” The Kaosheng and Liji both state: “The Son of Heaven's city wall is one thousand 雉 [*zhì*]”—meaning it holds ten of the one-hundred-雉 city walls. “A duke's or marquis's wall is one hundred 雉; an earl's is seventy 雉; a viscount's or baron's is fifty 雉. However, the walls of the feudal lords omit the south wall in order to submit their transgressions [for inspection].” The second character is *t[ú]-ji[á]* fan; Du's commentary on the Zuo zhuan says: “A 堞 [*dié*] is the female parapet (crenel) on top of a city wall.” The Shuowen jiezi says: “A low crenel wall.” It is classified under 土 [earth] with 枼 [*yè*] phonetic).
