祠祭 (sacrifices and offerings: the first character is *s[ì]-z[ī]* fan; the Erya says: “The spring sacrifice is called 祠 [*cí*].” Guo Pu's commentary states: “祠 is equivalent to 飤 (to feed).” 飤 is pronounced *s[ì]*. The second character is *z[ǐ]-l[ì]* fan; the Qieyun states: “To cook and present offerings.” The Erya says: “Sacrificing to Heaven is called burning firewood (燔柴); sacrificing to Earth is called burying in the dust (塵埋).” The Analects says: “Sacrifice to the spirits as if the spirits were present.” The Shuowen jiezi states that the character 祭 is classified under 月 (pronounced 肉 [meat]), under 又 (pronounced 手 [hand]), and under 示 (pronounced 視 [vision]); meaning holding meat in the hand to show it forth is a sacrifice. The sūtra writing 祭 is not the original character).
