非辜（下古胡反爾雅曰辜辠也辠音罪言人自取其辛苦即為辠矣因秦始皇冀累世為皇嫌辠字似皇字故改為罪也辜說文從辠省古聲也經文從手作𢪿傳寫誤也字書無文也）。

非辜 (innocent / not guilty: the second character is *g[ǔ]-h[ú]* fan; the Erya states: “辜 [*gū*] means guilt (辠).” 辠 is pronounced 罪 [*zuì*]. It means that when a person brings suffering upon himself, that is guilt. Because the First Emperor of Qin hoped to remain emperor for generations and disliked that the character 辠 resembled the character 皇 [emperor], he changed it to 罪. The Shuowen jiezi states that 辜 is classified under an abbreviated 辠 with 古 phonetic. The sūtra text written with 手 [hand] as 𢪿 is an error in copying; character dictionaries contain no such form).
