箏笛 (The first character is pronounced 側 + 莖 fanqie. The Shuowen jiezi says: 'A stringed instrument played by plucking, with a body like a zhu.' Originally the great se had twenty-seven strings; unrighteous men of Qin, two sons contesting their father's se, each obtained thirteen strings, hence it was named zheng [contest]. The second character is pronounced 徒 + 歷 fanqie. The Shuowen says: 'The di flute has seven holes.' Popular usage calls the Qiang flute, which has three holes, by this name. The Fengsu tong says: 'Di means to cleanse [di], meaning to cleanse away depravity and filth and admit elegance and correctness.' Furthermore, in the time of Emperor Wu of the Han, Qiu Zhong was skilled at making flutes).
