揀擇（上古眼反字書云揀選也擇取好者說文云從手柬聲柬從束八在中音同上經文從東作揀書字人誤也下音澤擇亦揀也說文云選也從手澤省聲字）。

To select / to choose (揀擇) (The first [character] has the fanqie gǔ + yǎn [jiǎn]. Character books say: 'Jiǎn means to select; to choose and pick the good.' The Shuowen states: 'It derives from hand (手) with the phonetic jiǎn (柬).' Jiǎn derives from bundle (束) with eight (八) in the middle, having the same pronunciation as above. In the sūtra text it is written with east (東) as 揀, which is an error by the scribe. The second [character] has the sound zé. Zé also means to select. The Shuowen states: 'To choose. It derives from hand (手) with the phonetic zé (澤) abbreviated').
