貿易（上莫侯反爾雅曰貿賈市也考聲貿買也又交易也下音半益反謂交還貨易也說文從日勿聲也）。

貿易 (for the first character, [mào], fanqie 莫侯 [m- + -əu = məu/mào]. The Erya says: “貿 means commerce and market-trade.” The Kaosheng says: “貿 means to buy; also to exchange.” For the second character, pronounced with the fanqie 半益 [p- + -ɨɛk = pɨɛk/yì], meaning to barter goods back and forth. The Shuowen says: “It takes 日 as radical and 勿 as phonetic.”)
