Twisting threads [撚綫] (The first character has the fanqie phonetic spelling 年 + 典; the Fangyan says: "Nian means to splice"; Gu Yewang says: "It means connecting continuously"; the Shuowen says that nian means to hold; it is composed of hand [手] with 然 as the phonetic. The second has the fanqie phonetic spelling 先 + 薦; people write it as 線; the character dictionary says to join threads).
