鄉黨（上許良反釋名鄉向也謂眾所向下多朗反釋名云黨長也謂一聚所導長也鄭注論語云万二千五百家為鄉五百家黨也）。

鄉黨 (The first character has the fanqie *xu* + *liang* [xiang]. The *Shiming* states: "*Xiang* (township) means *xiang* (to incline toward), referring to that toward which the multitude inclines." The second character has the fanqie *duo* + *lang* [dang]. The *Shiming* states: "*Dang* means elder (*zhang*), meaning the guiding elder of a gathering." Zheng [Xuan]'s commentary on the *Analects* states: "Twelve thousand five hundred households make a township (*xiang*); five hundred households make a village (*dang*).")
