Crossbar and bolt (關鍵) (the first character is gu + huan fan [guān]; Shuowen says: "Holding a door with a horizontal beam is called a crossbar (關)." Shenglei says: "A bar is that by which a door is closed." Qieyun: "A door latch." Shuowen: Formed with the men [gate] signific and luan phonetic. The scripture text writes 閞, pronounced bian; Erya says: "閞 is called 槉," not the meaning of crossbar. The second character is qi + nian fan [jiàn]; Qieyun: "The bolt and key of a lock." Character dictionaries: "The horizontal beam is called a crossbar (關); the vertical bolt is called a bolt (鍵)").
