Severing thread (斷緒: the first [character] is *duan*, fanqie 徒管. The Qieyun says: 'To sever.' The Shuowen jiezi says: 'To cut.' Derived from 斤 and 㡭; an associative compound. 㡭 is an ancient script form of the character 絕 (to cut off); the character 繼 is also derived from it. In the sūtra text it is written as 斷, an abbreviation, or written as 斷, a vulgar usage. The second [character] is *xu*, fanqie 徐呂; to draw out a thread. The Qieyun says: 'Beginning of a thread.' Character dictionaries say: 'To continue; also, silk-cocoon thread.' Derived from the silk radical 糸 with an abbreviated 著 as phonetic).
