沈溺(上直林反切韻沒也字書濁也又下也說文從水冘聲也冘音淫經文作沉非下正作溺古文作㲻同乃歷反說文溺亦沒也從人沒在水也)。
Sinking and drowning (沈溺: the first [character] is *chen*, fanqie 直林. The Qieyun says: 'Submerged.' Character dictionaries say: 'Turbid; also, to descend.' The Shuowen jiezi says it is derived from the water radical 水 with 冘 as phonetic; 冘 is pronounced *yin*. In the sūtra text it is written as 沉, which is incorrect. The second [character] standard form is written 溺; ancient script writes it as 㲻, identical; fanqie 乃歷. The Shuowen jiezi says: '溺 also means submerged; derived from a person submerged in water').
