厭禱（上於艷於琰二反字書作[示*厭]謂[示*厭]穰也考聲云厭魅也又著也說文作猒從犬甘肉也下都皓反切韻請也字書云祈於天神也論語云請於上下神祇也）。

厭禱 (The first character has the two fanqie readings yu + yan and yu + yan; dictionaries write it as [示*厭], meaning to avert misfortune by rituals. The Kaosheng says: “Sorcery and bewitchment; also to fix upon.” The Shuowen writes it as 猒, composed of quan (‘dog’) and gan (‘sweet meat’). The second character has the fanqie du + hao; the Qieyun says: “To supplicate.” Dictionaries say: “To pray to the celestial spirits.” The Lunyu says: “Supplicate to the spirits of heaven above and earth below.”)
