Caitya (制底: the lower character has the fanqie *dīng* + *yǐ* [dǐ]; also called *zhìduō*, and anciently called *zhītí*, all being phonetic corruptions of the Sanskrit term; they are actually identical. Old glossaries translated it as "temple" [miào], referring to monastic temples, stūpas, shrines, and the like).
