Dancing and stamping (舞蹈: the first character is [pronounced with the] fanqie [initial and final of] 無 and 主; the Qieyun says it means singing and dancing; the Zuo Zhuan says dancing is that by which the eight tones are modulated and the eight winds are enacted; the Erya says 'wǔ' means hopping in the rain sacrifice; the Shuowen derives it from 'chuǎn' and an abbreviated phonetic 'wú'; the Vinaya text incorrectly writes it with the 'person' radical as 儛. The second character is [pronounced with the] fanqie [initial and final of] 徒 and 到; the Qieyun says it means treading upon; the Shuowen says it takes the 'foot' radical and the phonetic 'yǎo'; in proper usage, movement of the hands is called 'wǔ', and of the feet is called 'dǎo'; the Vinaya text writes it as 踏, pronounced with the fanqie [initial and final of] 徒 and 荅, which does not convey the meaning of 'wǔdǎo'; 'chuǎn' is pronounced with the fanqie [initial and final of] 川 and 兖).
