[Subhadra] This translates as Good and Worthy. The Xiyu ji says: 'In the speech of Tang, it means Well and Worthy; the old form Subatuoluo is corrupt. He was a brahmacārin of Kuśinagara, one hundred and twenty years of age.' The Niḥsāraṇa Sūtra says: 'Subhadra was intelligent and of great wisdom, recited the four Vedas, and was thoroughly versed in all secular writings and treatises, being revered by all people. Hearing of the Buddha's nirvāṇa, he went to where the Buddha was. Hearing the Eightfold Noble Path, his mind opened in awakening, and he attained the first fruit. He renounced household life under the Buddha, who further expounded the Four Noble Truths at length for him, whereupon he became an arhat.'
