【Buddhasimha】 The *Records of the Western Regions* states: "In the Tang language, it is Lion Awakening (Shizijue). He was a disciple of Asaṅga, whose secret practices were unfathomable and whose lofty talent was renowned. Two or three worthy sages often said to one another: 'In all our cultivation of practice, we vow to behold Maitreya. Whoever relinquishes his life first and succeeds in fulfilling this former wish must report back to inform the others of his arrival.' Buddhasimha was the first to relinquish his life, but for three years gave no report. Vasubandhu Bodhisattva soon after also relinquished his life, and after six months had passed, there was still no report either. At that time, practitioners of other traditions all mocked them, thinking they had drifted into evil destinies and had no spiritual insight. Later, in the first watch of the night, when Asaṅga Bodhisattva was just instructing his disciples in the methods of samādhi, the lamp-light suddenly grew dim, and a great radiance appeared in the sky. A heavenly immortal descended through the void, stepped onto the terrace and court, and bowed in reverence to Asaṅga. Asaṅga said: 'Why have you come so late? What do you say now?' He replied: 'Relinquishing my life here, I went to the Tuṣita Heaven and was born inside a lotus in Maitreya's inner assembly. As soon as the lotus opened, Maitreya praised me, saying, "Welcome, Vast Wisdom." Having only just made one circumambulation, I came at once to make my report.' Asaṅga said: 'Where is Buddhasimha now?' He replied: 'Just as I was circumambulating, I saw Buddhasimha among the outer assembly, indulging in the five desires, with no leisure to look around.' Asaṅga asked: 'What are Maitreya's marks? What Dharma does he preach?' He replied: 'Maitreya's marks and signs cannot be fully expressed in words; the wonderful Dharma he expounds is not different in meaning from this. Yet the Bodhisattva's wonderful voice is clear, melodious, harmonious, and elegant, so that those who hear it forget their weariness.'"
