[Dharmakṣema] Also called Tanwuchen; here translated as "Dharma Abundance" (Fafeng). A native of Central India. He recited ten thousand words daily. At first he studied the Hīnayāna and various treatises on the five sciences; later he met a white-haired meditation master who instructed him in the Mahāyāna, and after ten days of debate, he finally awakened to its great purport. Dharmakṣema clearly understood spellcraft, and wherever he applied it, it proved efficacious; in the Western Regions he was called the Great Master of Divine Spells. In the first year of the Xuanshi reign era of Juqu [Mengxun] of the Northern Liang, he arrived in Guzang, carrying the first portion of the Nirvāṇa Sūtra in ten fascicles along with the Bodhisattva Precepts, staying at a guest house. Fearing the loss of the original text of the sūtra, he used it as a pillow while sleeping. At night a divine being dragged Dharmakṣema to the ground; Dharmakṣema thought it was a thief. After three nights like this, he heard a voice in the air say: "This is the treasury of liberation of the Tathāgata; why do you use it as a pillow?" Dharmakṣema heard this and gradually awakened to it, placing it in a high position. When thieves tried to seize it at night, they could not lift it. The next morning, when Dharmakṣema held it, it was not heavy. The thieves regarded him as a holy man, and all came to bow and apologize. Juqu Mengxun heard of Dharmakṣema's reputation, treated him generously, and requested him to translate.
