【智嚴】涼州人。道化所被，幽顯咸伏。未出家前，曾犯五戒。後受僧具，疑不得戒。遂泛海至印度，咨問羅漢，亦不能決。為詢彌勒，慈氏答云得戒。嚴甚喜焉。得經梵本。宋文元嘉，楊都翻譯。

[Zhiyan] A native of Liangzhou. Wherever his doctrinal transformation reached, both the unseen and the visible submitted. Before renouncing household life, he had violated the five precepts. Later, after receiving full monastic ordination, he doubted whether he had truly obtained the precepts. He thereupon sailed across the sea to India to consult an arhat, who also could not resolve the matter. Inquiring with Maitreya on his behalf, the Merciful One replied that he had indeed obtained the precepts. Zhiyan was greatly delighted. Having obtained Sanskrit texts of sūtras, during the Yuanjia reign era of Emperor Wen of Song, he translated in Yangdu.
