【提婆達多】亦名調達，亦名提婆達兜。《法苑》云：「《本起經》：『提婆達多，齊云天熱。以其生時，人天等眾，心皆驚熱。』無性《攝論》云：『唐云天授，亦云天與。謂從天乞得故。』《入大乘論》：『問：「彼提婆達多，世世為佛怨，云何而言是大菩薩？」答：「若是怨者，云何而得世世相值？如二人行，東西各去，步步轉遠，豈得為伴？」』又云是賓伽羅菩薩。」

【Tipodaduo】(Devadatta) Also named Tiaoda, also named Tipodadou. The Fayuan [zhulin] says: "The Benqi jing [says]: 'Devadatta, in the language of Qi is Tianre (Heavenly Heat). Because at the time of his birth, the minds of the assemblies of humans and devas were all alarmed and fevered.' Wuxing's commentary on the Mahāyānasaṃgraha says: 'In the language of the Tang, Tianshou (Heaven-Bestowed), also called Tianyu (Given by Heaven). That is, obtained by begging from Heaven.' The Ru Dacheng lun [says]: 'Question: "That Devadatta was the Buddha's enemy life after life; how can it be said that he is a great bodhisattva?" Answer: "If he were an enemy, how could they meet life after life? Like two people walking, one heading east and one west, with every step they grow farther apart; how could they be companions?"' It also says he is Bodhisattva Piṅgala."
