《俱舍玄義》云：「學乖諦理，隨自妄情，不返內覺，稱為外道。」《均聖論》云：「蔽理之徒，封著外教。」《辯正論》曰：「九十五種騰翥（之庶）於西戎，三十六部淆亂於東國。」垂裕云：「準《九十六外道經》，於中一道是正，即佛也；九十五皆邪。《華嚴》、《大論》九十六皆邪者，以大斥小故。」百論云：「順聲聞道者，皆悉是邪。」

The Kosha Xuanyi says: "Those whose study deviates from true reality, who follow their own deluded passions, and do not return to inner enlightenment, are called non-Buddhist paths (tīrthika)." The Junsheng lun says: "Those who obscure reality, clung fast to outer teachings." The Bianzheng lun says: "Ninety-five kinds soared among the Western Barbarians; thirty-six divisions created turmoil in the Eastern Land." Chuiyu says: "According to the Sutra of Ninety-Six Tīrthikas, among them one path is correct, which is the Buddha; the ninety-five are all heterodox. That the Avataṃsaka and Mahāprajñāpāramitopadeśa say that all ninety-six are heterodox is because the Great [Vehicle] repudiates the Small [Vehicle]." The Śata-śāstra says: "All who conform to the Śrāvaka path are heterodox."
