Master Kumārajīva says: "There are three kinds of the six teachers, making eighteen schools in all." The first claims omniscience. The Sijiao yi states: "With a crooked mind seeing reality, crooked wisdom arises, and eloquence is unimpeded." The second obtains the five supernatural powers. The Sijiao yi states: "Attaining worldly dhyāna, the five supernatural powers arise; they also possess compassion and the power of patience: whether cut with a knife or smeared with incense, their mind has neither hatred nor love." The third recites the four Vedas. The Sijiao yi states: "They are learned and erudite, mastering the four Vedas and the eighteen great classics. In worldly fortunes and misfortunes, astronomy and geography, medicine, divination and physiognomy, there is nothing they do not know." The Jingming shu matches these three kinds to the six teachers: each teacher has three, making eighteen kinds of non-Buddhist teachers. The Fuxing states: "The primal ancestor of the six teachers was Kapila; its branching streams differentiated to become the six lineages." Therefore, this collection now enumerates the six teachers.
