[Anavatapta] The Record of the Western Regions says: 'In the center of Jambudvīpa lies Lake Anavatapta, which in the Tang language means Without Scorching Torment. Formerly called Anouda, which is an error. It lies south of Mount Gandhamādana and north of the Great Snowy Mountains. It has a circumference of eight hundred li, and its banks are adorned with gold, silver, copper, iron, lapis lazuli, and crystal. Golden sands spread everywhere, and its clear waves reflect like mirrors. Through the power of his vows, a great bodhisattva transformed into a dragon king, secretly making his dwelling therein and bringing forth cool, pure water. Thus, from the silver ox's mouth on the eastern face of the lake flows the Gaṅgā River, which circles the lake once and enters the southeastern sea. From the golden elephant's mouth on the southern face flows the Sindhu River, which circles the lake once and enters the southwestern sea. From the lapis lazuli horse's mouth on the western face flows the Vakṣu River, which circles the lake once and enters the northwestern sea. From the crystal lion's mouth on the northern face flows the Sītā River, which circles the lake once and enters the northeastern sea. Some say that flowing secretly underground, it emerges at Mount Jishi; this is the current of the Sītā River, which forms the source of the Yellow River in China.' The Yuanshenqi of the Classic of Filial Piety says: 'The Yellow River is the elder of waters.'
