[Dvīpa] The *Great Treatise* translates it as "continent/island" (zhou). The *Erya* states: "That in the midst of water where one can stay is called an island (zhou)." The *Large Prajñāpāramitā Sūtra* says: "Subhūti! Just as with rivers and the great ocean, that which is cut off from water on four sides is an island. Subhūti! Form is also like this, cut off from its prior and subsequent limits." The *Great Treatise* says: "As for worldly islands, like an island there is no land on its four sides. Phenomena such as form are also like this: prior and subsequent are both unattainable, and the middle is likewise so." Or it is said that an island or sandbank (tan) (the *Erya* refers to a heap of sand within the water; as for zhu, the *Erya* calls it a small island) is called an islet (zhu). The *Mahāparinirvāṇa Sūtra* says: "For example, a merchant desires to reach an islet of jewels, but does not know the road; someone shows it to him, and he immediately reaches the islet of jewels and obtains all the precious treasures. Great parinirvāṇa is compared to a jewel."
