【摩訶鉢特摩】此云大紅蓮華。《大論》：「問：『諸床可坐，何必蓮華？』答：『床為世間白衣坐法。又以蓮華軟淨，欲現神力，能坐其上，令不壞故。又以莊嚴妙法座故（云云）。又如此華，華臺嚴淨，香妙可坐。』」

[Mahāpadma]: Translated here as "great red lotus flower." The Mahāprajñāpāramitopadeśa states: "Question: 'All seats can be sat upon, so why must it be a lotus flower?' Answer: 'Chairs are the sitting method for secular laypeople. Moreover, because the lotus flower is soft and pure, he wishes to manifest miraculous power to be able to sit upon it without causing it to break. Furthermore, it is to adorn the sublime Dharma seat (and so forth). In addition, in a flower such as this, the flower calyx is adorned and pure, fragrant and sublime, suitable to sit upon.'"
