[Gandharāya]: Properly called gandha; translated here as incense. Zhang Hua's Bowu zhi says: "An envoy from a western country presented incense. Under Han regulations, if it did not weigh a pound, it could not be accepted. The envoy then departed privately and placed incense the size of a large bean on the palace gate. The fragrance was smelled across ten li in all four directions of Chang'an, subsiding only after a month." The Avataṃsaka Sūtra says: "In the heaven of Sudharma, there is an incense named pure adornment. If one pellet is burned to perfume with it, it causes all the devas universally to be mindful of the Buddha."
