[Agaru]: Or called ejielu; translated here as agarwood. The Avataṃsaka Sūtra says: "By the Anavatapta Lake is produced water-sinking incense, named lotus treasury. A single pellet of this incense is the size of a hemp seed. If it is burned, its fragrant aroma pervades and perfumes the realm of Jambudvīpa." The Yiwu zhi says: "Produced in the commandery of Rinan. When one wishes to harvest it, one must first fell the tree and damage it; left lying on the ground for a long time, the exterior rots away. That whose heartwood is hard will sink when placed in water; it is called sinking incense (agarwood). Next, that which is between the heartwood and sapwood, being not very dense and hard, when placed in water neither sinks nor floats but remains level with the water; it is named zhan incense."
