[Maṇi] Or called yumo. Master Huilin states: 'Correctly called maṇi, which is the general name for pearls and jewels. It is translated here as free of defilement; this gem is brilliant and pure, unstained by filth. Sometimes the character fan (Brahma) is added to manifest its purity. It is also translated as increasing; where this gem resides, dignity and virtue increase.' The Pañcaviṃśatisāhasrikā-prajñāpāramitā Sūtra states: 'Like a maṇi jewel, if it is in water, it assumes whatever color is presented. Wrapped in blue cloth, the water's color becomes blue; if wrapped in yellow, red, white, crimson, or light blue cloth, it assumes yellow, red, white, crimson, or light blue accordingly.' Also in the Pañcaviṃśatisāhasrikā: 'Ānanda asked Kauśika: "Is this maṇi jewel a treasure of the heavens, or is it a treasure of Jambudvīpa?" Śakra Devānām-Indra replied: "It is a treasure of the heavens. People of Jambudvīpa also have this treasure, but its signs of merit are somewhat incomplete."' The Da zhidu lun states: 'Some say this precious pearl comes out of the brain of a dragon king. If a person obtains this pearl, poison cannot harm them, and entering fire they are not burned.' The Fuxing states: 'It is also called cintāmaṇi (wish-fulfilling). It seems that Chinese and Sanskrit differ here from the Da zhidu lun. The Avataṃsaka Sūtra speaks of "wish-fulfilling maṇi," seemingly listing two names side by side. If the Lotus Sūtra speaks of "maṇi jewels and the like," they seem to be distinct substances.' The Mahālaṅkāra-śāstra states: 'There is a maṇi jewel as large as a kneecap.' The Da zhidu lun states: 'The wish-fulfilling jewel is shaped like a mustard seed or millet.' It also states: 'The wish-fulfilling jewel comes from the Buddha's relics. When the Dharma is exhausted and perishes, all the relics transform into wish-fulfilling jewels.' The Guan jing identifies ruyi (cintā) as maṇi. Tiantai says: 'Maṇi means wish-fulfilling.'
