【Khārī】Here translated as hu. The Treatise on Pitchpipes and Calendars states: 'The measures of capacity are the yue, the ge, the sheng, the dou, and the hu.' They are that by which quantity is measured. They originally arose from the yue of the Yellow Bell; using standard measures, its volume was examined, filling the yue with one thousand two hundred medium-sized grains of black millet; using well water, its level was adjusted (Meng Kang says: 'The levelling stick should be straight, so it is levelled with water. Well water is clear, and being clear it is level'); combining the yue makes a ge, ten ge make a sheng, ten sheng make a dou, ten dou make a hu, and the five measures of capacity are complete. Measuring quantity does not err by a gui or a cuo (Ying Shao says: 'A gui is a natural form, the beginning of yin and yang. Four gui are called a cuo; a cuo is what is pinched with three fingers').
