[Hingu]: An erroneous transcription. Master Ying says: 'This is translated as 'little'; properly rendered, it is xingyi. It comes from the country of Uḍḍiyāna, where the locals eat it regularly. The local tradition here that takes it to be yuntai (rapeseed/colza) is incorrect. This is tree sap resembling peach gum; people of the Western Regions gather it and place it in food. It is what is now called awei (asafetida).' Tripiṭaka Master Cimin says: 'Its root resembles a turnip; when pulled from the earth, it is pungent and foul-smelling. When Cimin arrived in that land in winter, he did not see its sprouts.' The Cang Jie pian says: 'Hun means pungent vegetables. Any foodstuff that is pungent and foul-smelling is called hun.'
