The essence of true reality is quiescent; because its source is still, it is called cessation. The original enlightenment is luminous awareness; because it is constantly bright, it is called contemplation. When the wind of delusion suddenly stirs, one relies on wonderful śamatha to stop it; when the jewel of the mind has long been obscured, one must use vipaśyanā to contemplate it. In the chapter explaining names in the *Great Cessation and Contemplation* (Mohe zhiguan), first it generally shares the three virtues, and second, each unfolds three meanings. Now, relying on that treatise, the Sanskrit terms are set out separately.
