《涅槃》云：「譬如長者唯有一子，心常憶念。憐愛無已。將詣師所欲令受學，懼不速成，尋便將還。以愛念故，晝夜殷勤，教其半字而不教誨《毘伽羅論》。何以故？以其幼稚力未堪故。」

The Nirvāṇa-sūtra says: 'For example, an elder had only one son, whom he constantly kept in mind, with boundless love and affection. He took him to a teacher wishing to have him study, but fearing he would not finish quickly, he soon brought him back. Because of his loving thought, day and night with diligence he taught him the half-character [alphabet] and did not instruct him in the Vyākaraṇa treatise. Why is this? Because being young, his strength was not yet adequate.'
