All living beings slumber in ignorance throughout the dark, long night. The first to awaken alerted the world, with the sun of wisdom blazing brilliantly. Thus the Xiyu ji explains that four suns illuminated the world: in the east was Aśvaghoṣa, in the south was Āryadeva, in the west was Nāgārjuna, and in the north was Kumāralāta; some penetrated the tenets of the myriad scriptures, while others separately commented on a single sūtra. Having divided their illumination across the four directions, they collectively destroyed all obscurations; therefore, in this collection, the masters of treatises are now listed.
