[Buddhayaśas] Here translated as "Awakened Brilliance" (Jueming). A native of Jibin. His conduct was chaste and pure, his adherence to the precepts firm and unyielding; his deportment was auspicious and refined, and his gaze extraordinary. In the treatises of the five sciences and four Vedas, and the scriptures of the three baskets and twelve divisions, he had an exceptional understanding of the profound purports, and his eloquence flowed without obstruction. In the Hongshi reign era of the Yao Qin, he arrived in Guzang. Kumārajīva had formerly taken him as his teacher and urged Yao Xing to go and invite him. Yao Xing immediately decreed an invitation and sent gifts. Buddhayaśas laughed and refused them, saying: "Since the bright decree has descended, I ought to travel swiftly; but the dānapati treats scholars with such generosity that if I were to be treated like Kumārajīva, I dare not accept your order." Only after emissaries were sent again with earnest persuasions did he arrive in Chang'an. Yao Xing went out in person to welcome him, specially establishing a new office in Xiaoyao Garden; but he refused all offerings of the four requisites. When the time came, he simply went begging for food, taking only one meal [a day]. Buddhayaśas had a red beard, so the people of the time called him the "Red-Bearded Vibhāṣā." All the clothing and bedding supplied by Yao Xing filled three rooms, yet he paid no heed to them. Yao Xing sold them to build a temple.
