Looking up, there is the true Dharma; looking down, conventional appellations are established. Though the names differ individually, their meanings also interpenetrate. Thus the Fayuan [zhulin] says: 'For instance, Śākya is translated as "Capable of Benevolence"; is there any buddha who is not capable of benevolence? Amitābha is called "Immeasurable Life"; is there any buddha who is not long-lived? It is only to suit capacities and establish conversion that names are set up in accordance with the world.' When titles are given, their functions differ, yet when meanings are revealed, their powers and applications are equal. Only then does one know that the immeasurable names throughout the three periods of time fully manifest the immeasurable virtues of all buddhas.
