The Buddhist teachings elucidate principle and transform the minds of beings, transcending ordinary ranks and ascending into the realm of the noble. Those who, knowing suffering, constantly harbor revulsion and detachment; who, severing the causes of suffering, forever extinguish the moistening of rebirth; who, realizing cessation, loftily accord with the unconditioned; and who, cultivating the path, seek solely self-liberation—this is the śrāvaka vehicle. Those who contemplate ignorance as the beginning of delusion and know all formations to be the source of illusion; who sever the entangling links of the two causes and extinguish the fetters of the five effects—this is the pratyekabuddha vehicle. Those who regard [all beings] equally as an only child and universally save all living beings; who uphold the vows of the four great resolves and practice the pure deeds of the six perfections—this is the bodhisattva vehicle. Speaking of their crossing of the river, though there are differences among the elephant, the horse, and the hare; when discussing their emergence from the burning house, in truth there is no difference among the goat, the deer, and the bullock.
