[Pratyekabuddha] Gushan says: "This is translated as 'condition-enlightened' (yuangue), because they awaken to the Path by contemplating the twelve conditions. It is also translated as 'solitary-enlightened' (dujue), because they appear in an era without a Buddha and awaken on their own without a teacher." Now the Śūraṅgama sūtra says: "There were also immeasurable pratyekas..."—could it not be that they come from other worlds without Buddhas, where great provisional [means] lead to the real, and thus come to this assembly? Zhachuan says: "Or could it be that the Buddha knew this assembly would attain great benefit, and by his spiritual power gathered them here? Is that not also possible?" The solitary-enlightened being called 'one resembling a unicorn' is a designation from the Kośa; the designation 'rhinoceros horn' comes from the Mahāsaṃnipāta-sūtra. Zuili says: "The solitary-enlightened also contemplate the twelve causes and conditions, so they may also be called condition-enlightened. It is only according to the distinction of sharp or dull faculties, and meeting or not meeting a Buddha, that they are divided into two kinds."
