[Arhat] The Dazhidu lun says: "Ari means thief, and han means to slay; all thieves of affliction are slain. Furthermore, for an arhat, because all defilements are exhausted, they are worthy of receiving offerings from all worldly devas and humans. Moreover, a means non-, and rahan means birth; they are never born again in future lives; this is called arhat." The Fahua shu says: "The Aba jing calls them 'worthy of truth' (yingzhen); the Ruiying calls them 'true persons' (zhenren); these all interpret 'arhat' in terms of non-arising. Or some say it is not translated because the name contains three meanings: with the husk of ignorance sloughed off, in the field of future lifetimes they do not receive the retribution of saṃsāra, hence 'non-arising' (busheng). Because the ninety-eight dormant defilements are exhausted, it is called 'slayer of thieves' (shazei). Endowed with the virtues of wisdom and severance, they are worthy to be fields of merit for humans and devas, hence 'worthy of offerings' (yinggong). Because it contains these three meanings, the Sanskrit name is retained."
