[Sāgara] Or *Sāgāra*; this means "salty ocean." The *Book of Documents* says: "The Yangzi and the Han pay court to the ocean." *Zhuangzi* says: "The vast ocean is the Lake of Heaven." *Huainanzi* says: "The ocean does not refuse accumulated waters, and thereby achieves its greatness." Sun Qingzi [Xunzi] says: "Without accumulating tiny streams, there is no way to form an ocean." *Laozi* says: "That by which rivers and oceans can be kings of the hundred valleys is their excellence at staying below." Tides have their morning and evening periods; hence the capital of Wu has morning and evening pools. The new *Avataṃsaka Sūtra* says: "For example, the great ocean obtains the name 'great ocean' through ten kinds of characteristics that cannot be usurped or removed: first, it gradually deepens in sequence; second, it does not tolerate dead corpses; third, when all other waters enter into it, they lose their original names; fourth, all universally share one single taste; fifth, it contains immeasurable precious jewels; sixth, none can reach its bottom; seventh, it is vast and immeasurable; eighth, it is the dwelling place of large bodies; ninth, its tides do not exceed their limits; tenth, it universally receives heavy rain without overflowing." The *Vajrasamādhi indestructible and imperishable sūtra* says: "Due to Mount Wocjiao [Vaḍavāmukha], the great ocean does not increase; due to the diamond wheel, the great ocean does not decrease; because this diamond wheel turns according to the seasons, it causes the waters of the great ocean to share the single salty taste." The *Avataṃsaka Sūtra* says: "The water in the palace of that Nāga King Sāgara gushes forth and enters the ocean, doubling the previous amount. The water that emerges is of the color of dark lapis lazuli; it gushes forth at fixed times, and therefore the tides of the great ocean do not miss their time." The *Mahāsaṃnipāta Sūtra* says: "Just as the bodies and external forms of all sentient beings in Jambudvīpa are all reflected in the great ocean, it is therefore named the ocean-reflection [sāgara-mudrā]. The bodhisattva is also like this: having attained the ocean-reflection samādhi, they can discern the mental activities of all sentient beings and attain luminous wisdom regarding all Dharma gates." The *Avataṃsaka Sūtra* says: "The ocean has an extraordinary and superior phenomenon, / Able to serve as the seal of equality for all; / Sentient beings, treasures, and flowing streams, / It can universally embrace without rejection. / Those who possess inexhaustible dhyāna and liberation / Are likewise a seal of equality; / Merits, wisdom, and all wondrous practices— / They cultivate all without ever growing weary."
