[Eraṇḍa]: The *Sūtra of the Ocean-like Samādhi of the Contemplation of the Buddha* says: 'For example, eraṇḍa grows together with candana on Mount Malaya. Gośīrṣa-candana grows within clumps of eraṇḍa; before it grows large, while still underground, its sprouts, stems, branches, and leaves are like bamboo shoots in Jambudvīpa. People do not know this, and say that this mountain has exclusively eraṇḍa and no candana. Now eraṇḍa stinks, stinking like a bloated corpse, its stench wafting for forty yojanas. Its flowers are red, extremely delightful; if anyone eats them, they go mad and die. Although gośīrṣa-candana grows in this forest, because it has not yet matured, it cannot emit fragrance. When the moon is full in mid-autumn, it suddenly springs from the earth and becomes a candana tree. Everyone smells the supreme and exquisite fragrance of the gośīrṣa-candana, and the foul and evil stench of the eraṇḍa is gone forever.'
