The Vinaya explains five kinds of fruits: 1. Stone fruit, such as jujubes, apricots, etc. 2. Fleshy fruit, such as pears and crabapples, which are fruits of skin and flesh. 3. Shell fruit, such as coconuts, walnuts, pomegranates, etc. 4. Husked fruit (the character dictionaries give the pronunciation *kōng-wài*; coarse chaff and rind are called *huì*), such as pine nuts and cypress seeds. 5. Pod fruit, such as large and small beans, etc.
